I had wanted to visit Nepal to go trekking in the Himalayas for a long time and finally I managed to get some time off my job in 2013. I knew which company I wanted to do the trek with, World Expeditions. I had used World Expeditions before to summit Kilimanjaro and I liked their ethics when it comes to the guides and the porters. In addition, they had routes which stayed on the beaten track and those which are completely off the beaten track.

As I sat at our picnic spot, with incredible views of the Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand’s South Island, I felt like I was on top of the world. However, I knew that the environmental impact of my tour wasn’t adding to the reason why this Glacier is retreating at such a rapid pace. It leaves me wondering how long this glacier will be here if the helicopter tours continue at the pace they are.

As the paddle cuts through the clear blue sea, I glance down to see a penguin swimming through the waves. And that is not the only wonder of the sea that I will see today as seals, a stingray and many a sea bird make an appearance. I am sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park on a beautiful sunny day.

As I sat on the top deck of the boat, with the wind in my hair, I looked around at all the waterfalls gushing off the steep cliffs of the Sound into the ocean. Described as the eighth wonder of the world by Rudyard Kipling, no wonder it is really popular to go to Milford Sound from Te Anau. As with all budget travellers, I was looking for a cheap Milford Sound cruise that was good on the purse strings but also gave good service and a great experience. Well, look no further, as Go Orange provides just that on their newly refurbished Milford Haven ship.

When flying long haul, we often have to stop in transit airports for connecting flights. Sometimes these waits are as little as a few hours or as long as nearly 24 hours. Sometimes it’s worth looking for these extra long waits or even breaking up your flights so you can experience a new country on the way to the destinations. And with budget flights to these international hubs and cheap hotels in Dubai and beyond, these types of mini-breaks within a holiday are kind on the purse strings.
