Job Posting: Director, Field Sales – Independent Bookstore Channel
Location: New York, NY (Hybrid – 3 days in office)
Reports to: VP, Retail Sales

Salary Range: $110,000 - $130,000

 

Hachette Book Group (HBG) is seeking a dynamic and experienced sales leader to join our Retail Sales team as Director, Field Sales, with a focus on the independent bookstore channel across both adult and children’s divisions. This role is instrumental in driving growth, expanding market share, and strengthening our presence in the independent retail space.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and collaborative team leader who is passionate about books, understands the unique dynamics of the indie market, and has a proven track record in sales leadership. You'll work cross-functionally with publishing, marketing, publicity, and operations teams to develop and execute innovative, tailored sales strategies for this key channel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support a team of 11 field sales representatives, providing regular title updates, sales goals, marketing and publicity information, and inventory insights.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to grow sales and market share across the independent bookstore market.
  • Analyze sales performance, market trends, and account-level data to identify new opportunities and set channel priorities.
  • Strengthen and expand relationships with key indie bookstores, the ABA, and regional bookseller associations nationwide.
  • Champion the independent channel internally, advocating for its needs and highlighting emerging trends and titles.
  • Plan and facilitate regular title presentation meetings with the Field Sales team.
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders across the Adult and Kids divisions to align sales efforts with publishing goals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of sales and/or publishing management experience, including knowledge of the independent bookstore landscape.
  • Prior supervisory experience is required.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret sales data and trends to inform strategy.
  • Proven ability to lead a team, manage multiple priorities, and drive results.
  • Adaptable, solutions-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Passionate about books and publishing, with an eye for trends and cultural conversations.

Additional Information:

  • This role is based in New York City, with a hybrid work schedule (3 days/week in office) as part of HBG’s company policy.
  • Occasional travel may be required for industry events and regional meetings.

The compensation range for this position is $110,000-$130,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
