The Limited Term Environmental Scientist (ES) will assist the Office of Spill Prevention and Response with various tasks related to researching the health and pathology of sea otters. Based at the Marine Wildlife Care & Research Center in Santa Cruz, the ES will assist the Veterinary Specialist with post-mortem examinations, ensure the necropsy lab is kept clean and supplied appropriately, prepare samples for histology (including fixing tissues in formalin and trimming fixed tissues), submit samples to outside labs, enter and extract data into and out of computer databases, and assist with writing scientific reports and publications. Additional duties include maintaining readiness to respond to oil spills and assisting facility staff and research partners with occasional field work.
In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.

In an office environment that involves sitting most of the time and the use of a computer for several hours of the day. In a laboratory and in adherence to standard safety protocols, incumbent will be exposed to formalin and other laboratory chemicals, and occasionally to radiation from x-rays. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and be prepared to travel using a state vehicle. May be required to drive long distances seated for extended periods of time.
