CalRecycle is seeking an enthusiastic Environmental Scientist to join our talented team that is passionate about the responsible management of pharmaceutical and home generated sharps waste and extended producer responsibility (EPR)!

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Act as co-lead for implementation of the Pharmaceutical and Sharps Waste Stewardship Law.
  • Independently perform assigned environmental and natural resource management analysis, research, surveys, investigations, and studies.
  • Prepare a variety of regulatory, compliance, and other technical documents, reports, and other materials.
  • Provide program oversight functions.
  • Prepare non-routine correspondence and answer non-routine questions from the public. 
  • Interact with a variety of internal and external interested parties, including other government agencies, businesses, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Respond to complex inquiries from the public and draft non-routine correspondence regarding the program.
  • Conduct other related work to implement CalRecycle's product stewardship programs and initiatives
  • Provide consultative technical advice to various federal, state, and local government entities and agencies as well as non-governmental organizations and businesses.

Working Conditions

The incumbent works on the 10th floor of a high-rise office building in downtown Sacramento, in an enclosed, non-windowed office cubicle in a smoke-free environment. The work schedule is Monday through Friday. Travel may be required locally and within the state.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (and others from diverse backgrounds) and with external entities, including other government agencies, businesses, and non-governmental organizations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Strong project planning, project management, and organizational skills. 
  • Analytical and research experience, including experience collecting, analyzing, and evaluating quantitative and qualitative data to support environmental policy and decision-making. 
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, and other office productivity software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, web conferencing software (e.g., Teams, Zoom), etc.
