Job Description

POSITION CONCEPT

The individual who holds this position will be responsible for transporting, monitoring, controlling, and accounting for incarcerated inmates during transport outside of the SMPCC. They will also maintain order and provide security inside the courtrooms of the St. Martin Parish Courthouse, as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The most important and essential job duty of this position is attitude and includes the following: getting along with co-workers, being respectful to members of the community, making sure all employees under his/her command are working together as a team and functioning under pressure. Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining the decorum, order, and dignity of the courtroom
  • Assist the Judge(s) in any manner to facilitate the court proceedings.
  • Confront and remove individuals and/or items that may present a threat to the peace, order, or integrity of the court.
  • Transporting individuals in custody between correctional facilities, courtrooms, medical facilities, and other designated locations while ensuring their safety and security throughout the transportation process.
  • Maintaining order and security during transportation operations by monitoring inmates' behavior, enforcing safety protocols, and intervening in situations that may pose a threat to the safety of passengers or the public.
  • Completing accurate and detailed documentation of transportation activities, including logging departure and arrival times, documenting any incidents or issues encountered during transportation, and maintaining custody and transportation records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Responding promptly and effectively to emergency situations, such as medical emergencies, disturbances, or escape attempts, during transportation operations, and taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
  • Adhering to all departmental policies, procedures, and regulations governing transportation operations, including compliance with state and federal laws regarding the transportation of individuals in custody and the use of force when necessary.
  • Ensuring the proper maintenance and upkeep of transportation vehicles, including conducting pre-trip inspections, reporting any mechanical issues or safety concerns, and following established protocols for vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Assist jailers with inmates as needed.
  • Prepare daily transport of inmates on the travel log form.
  • Escorts offenders into surroundings requiring contact with judges, prosecuting attorneys, and other court personnel.
  • Maintain proper court security coverage and prevent escape of offenders.
  • May be required to work inside of the SMPCC as needed
  • Other job duties as assigned by the Sheriff and/or his designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of courthouse layout and daily operations
  • Louisiana POST (Level 1) certification
  • Ability to operate an automobile safely carrying multiple passengers while maintaining security and control

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and comprehend reports and manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, command staff and the public – in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to deal with situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness, and judgement.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to supervise the activity of a courtroom and be able to maintain order with tact and diplomacy.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current and Valid Louisiana Driver's License
  • Louisiana POST Certified

The employee is occasionally exposed to electrical shock and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be required to handle potentially violent and complex situations.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Work shift from 7:00am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday and 7:00am-11:00am Fridays.

Employees are required to work flexible hours when and if needed. In some circumstances employees may be subject to call-out 24 hours a day.

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS:

Employment with SMPSO is for no specific period. Your employment with SMPSO will be “at will,” meaning that either you or the Sheriff may terminate your employment at any time and for any reason, with or without cause. Although your job duties, title, compensation, and benefits, as well as the SMPSO's personnel policies and procedures, may change from time to time, the “at will” nature of your employment will not be affected by these changes.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

All employees of the SMPSO will have a probationary period of one (1) year. A job performance evaluation will be done after six (6) months.
