I love seeing a city in a way that is different to how most other tourists see it. This might be because I don’t like to identify as a tourist or perhaps I like to think I am not one of those people who follow the crowd . . . I am not sure. So I cannot help but be blown away by a tour of Lisbon, Portugal that I have taken with We Hate Tourism Tours. As the name states, they hate tourism tours and wouldn’t dream of taking you on ‘that’ type of tour.
I met Pedro at 9am along with 7 others with whom I was to spend the day. Pedro knew the city of Lisbon like the back of his hand. I learned and saw so much with a small group of great people. This tour is designed to introduce you to Lisbon, but actually, it was so much more. It actually makes you fall in love with Lisbon and I recommend it for tourists and locals alike.
Yes, you will go to a lot of the highlights of Lisbon but most you will see from a different viewpoint. You will learn about the history behind each area and quirky stories that only a true local would know about. As well as this, you will be taken to some absolutely amazing secret locations which you will never find without them.
The highlights for me were an amazing viewpoint over the city with the best street art, also visiting the most interesting Church in Lisbon. Visiting The Sanctuary of Christ the King and learning so much more about it than I ever imagine. Taking a walk through the narrow streets where a local woman sat at a window, watching us watching her. I saw a different side of Lisbon that most people won’t see or understand.
And of course, you can’t do all this on an empty stomach. We Hate Tourism Tours will treat you to lunch in their favourite place in the city. Here you will eat like a local, with the locals. And at the end of the day, they will see you off as with all their tours with a cherry shot and a local pasty.
I cannot recommend We Hate Tourism Tours enough. If you are over in Lisbon or Porto then make sure you check them out. You might also enjoy reading about the other tour I took with We Hate Tourism Tours.

What??? That’s the name of the tourism company??? That’s super interesting! Lolz…
This is very interesting. Usually I roam about myself than with a guided tour.
I’ve hardly been on 2-3 city tours and they were such unique ones and I loved them.
I’m hoping to visit Portugal early next year. Will definitely look into what they have to offer.
I also prefer joining a small group for a tour, than the bigger group because it is less stressful and have more time to explore the area. Lisbon is also in my list that needs to scratch soon and I am excited. Glad you had a famous time!
This sounds sooo much better than the free walking tours I normally take when visiting a new city. I’ve toured new cities with locals and foreigners (those who are now living in the city hut not originally from there) alike, and it makes all the difference to your a new city with a local. I love being shown secret local spots – it makes me feel like a VIP or detective or something. I am definitely checking out We Hate Tourism tours when I make it to Portugal!
What a unique name for a tour company! Ha! Well, it sounds like you had a great time and were able to see Lisbon from another perspective! It is a fantastic city — I managed to visit last year, and during their Feast of St Anthony, which was such an incredible experience! I’ll have to check out “We Hate Tourism” tours the next time I’m there! Thanks! 🙂
This is such a cool tip, thanks for sharing it Kathy! I love the name of this organization and the concept behind it, I’ll definitely book this tour next time I’ll be in Lisbon 🙂
Sounds great, I’m actually going to Lisbon in January so I’ll have to look them up. It’s great when you come across a well-run tour that gives you information about a place that you just wouldn’t get any other way. Also, love the idea of trying some local restaurants that are not in any guidebooks or full of tourists stuffing their faces with fries!
Love how this isn’t your average kind of tour! We always try to find quirky tours like this and I definitely prefer exploring in a smaller group too so you can interact more with the guide. Will keep this in mind for our upcoming trip to Lisbon!
This is such an interesting tour. I mostly go for self-guided tours but I totally understand how the experience is more enriching in the guided tours. As you rightly said, they take you to the same highlights you might have read about in your research but they tell you quirky tales which only locals would know. It’s just difficult to find an authentic, good tour guide, which makes your recommendation all the more important. Will keep this tour in mind when i visit Lisbon
